The Meeting Place – the story so far
Latest update - November 2018
Back in 2016 there was a lightbulb moment at Groundwork HQ – an idea to build Trafford Park’s first sustainable meeting room; shortly after, The Meeting Place became a reality and so our story begins…
The first stage was design. As a social enterprise committed to helping communities live and work in a more sustainable way sustainability was at the heart of The Meeting Place’s design process; Groundwork’s qualified Landscape Architects worked with Start Creative, an arts and well-being charity based in Salford, to make the idea a reality. The final design depicted a traditional round wood timber framed building, constructed using sustainably managed wood and fitted out with a number of eco-friendly features.
In February 17 planning permission was granted for The Meeting Place and construction was able to begin. Here’s a quick summary of the project so far:
May 2017 – Mace Construction lay the buildings concrete foundations.
June 2017 – Sustainable timber is delivered from TreeStation, a local social enterprise based in Gorton, allowing Start Creative to work on the frames erection throughout the summer and autumn of 2017.
December 2017 – The building’s recycled plastic roof tiles and Velux windows are installed, made possible by 3D scaffolding.
January 2018 – Work continues in the New Year on the buildings structure with essential tasks such as wall cladding, flooring and drainage; all completed before the end of spring 2018.
July 2018 – The building is made water tight thanks to the installation of the windows & main doors by Praters.
Over the winter months and into spring 2019 construction will continue on The Meeting Place. The next steps include:
– Installation of a rainwater harvesting system
– Construction of the veranda area
– Installation of all internal workings; electrics, plumping, heating etc.
– External landscaping
As a charity we value any support available from corporate partners; if you are able to donate, fund or give your time to any of the upcoming work please get in touch with Mike Ormerod, Executive Director on 0161 220 1000 or firstname.lastname@example.org
We are hopeful that these works will be completed by spring 2019 and the space will be available as a meeting room and training space.
